Summer lab leak news (Fauci's hearing + Redfield on Baric)
The last lab leak news update came before the anticlimactic June 2024 Fauci hearing. The Covid origins committee conducted interviews with the SARS2 suspects, exposing inconsistencies in statements. On June 2, the committee hinted at a confrontation with Fauci, but what unfolded felt more like a spectacle than substantive inquiry.
Bread & circuses
On June 3, 2024, Fauci walked into the Congressional hearing with audience members calling him a “mass murderer.” Another suggested, “My grandmother is dead because of you.”
Fauci lied in his opening statement by reading his "Cover-Your-Ass" FBI email:
Jeremy (Farrar of Welcome Trust): I just got off the phone with Kristian Andersen (Scripps Institute) and he related to me his concern about the furin (cleavage) site mutation in the spike protein of the currently circulating (SARS2). I told him that as soon as possible, he and Eddie Holmes (University of Sydney) should get a group of evolutionary biologists together to carefully examine the data to determine if his concerns are validated. He should do this very quickly and if everyone agrees with this concern, they should report it to the appropriate authorities. I would imagine that in the USA this would be the FBI and in the UK it would be MI5. It would be important to quickly get confirmation of the cause of his concern by experts in the field of coronaviruses and evolutionary biology. In the meantime, I will alert my US government official colleagues of my conversation with you and Kristian and determine what further investigation they recommend. Let us stay in touch. It is inconceivable that anyone who reads this email could conclude that I was trying to “cover up” the possibility of a laboratory leak. To the contrary, it demonstrates that I was advocating for a prompt and thorough examination of the data and a totally transparent process.
On Jan 30, 2020, two days before Fauci sent that CYA email, Andersen considered contacting the FBI. Farrar organized the Feb 1 call because of Andersen’s desire to do so. Andersen testified that Fauci was supposed to call the FBI but didn’t. Instead, Fauci called Ralph Baric, but none of this came up.
The Covid committee questions started with a body blow. It landed, but boredom followed. They quizzed Fauci on three NIAID grants to a dead Beijing scientist, not the three NIAID grants issued to Peter Daszak, which funded DARPA Defuse (Daszak didn’t deny it).
Zhou Yusen is the dead PLA scientist from Beijing, not Wuhan, who co-published with the University of Minnesota, not the WIV. Rand Paul interviewed his widow, but nothing came of it. If you think Covid, with a 99.9% survival rate, is a bioweapon, please log off. Fauci calls it Dual Use Research of Concern or DURC.
The Covid committee asked why former US CDC director Robert Redfield, a pro-lab leak virologist, wasn't invited to the Feb 1, 2020, teleconference. Fauci falsely claimed he had no input on the list of invited virologists. His long list of invited virologists (written, not verbal testimony) to the teleconference was a lie since Fauci invited Baric of UNC.
The Covid committee didn’t bother to follow up on the most explosive admission from their interviews; Baric quietly listened to Kristian Andersen’s evidence for engineering, then Baric ambushed Andersen two days later, on Feb 3, during a Fauci-organized NASEM meeting. Fauci then “prompted” both to write the Proximal Origin paper.
Fauci denied working with David Morens under oath, despite records showing they both worked on the 7th floor of NIAID's Building 31 in Bethesda, MA. Morens even detailed the $15M bodyguards in their NIAID office. Gerald Keusch from Boston University confirmed parts of this relationship, revealing Fauci suggested using burner phones and Gmail in October 2021 to avoid scrutiny over his connection to Daszak.
Why October? Because Daszak’s Defuse bid leaked in September 2021, and Fauci funded it. It wasn’t “that” DARPA grant; it was three NIAID grants. In the book, I don’t think Fauci knew what he was funding in 2019 since Daszak and Baric broke up the bat vaccine bid and buried the furin cleavage site discussion. But Fauci was editing EcoHealth’s bat vaccine papers in January 2020.
The Democrats fed Fauci a prepared question that allowed Fauci to use his “molecularly impossible” alibi, but funding Defuse was “molecularly possible” to have created Covid.
Fauci’s “molecularly impossible” defense
The Fauci hearing was a dud, but the US media asked tougher questions than Republican congressmen. If Fauci funded DARPA Defuse, he would have lost his best line, which he repeated during media interviews while promoting his memoir, On Call.
A reminder that Ralph Baric of UNC, whom Fauci secretly invited to the Feb 1, 2020, teleconference, had a genome <1% different from SARS2. That is “phylogenetically” close.

DARPA Defuse was never funded by the United States. However, in his testimony on Monday, Dr. Fauci explained that the Wuhan institute would not need to rely on U.S. funding to pursue research independently…Documents and email correspondence between the WIV and Dr. Baric are still being withheld from the public while their release is fiercely contested in litigation.
Alina Chan’s New York Times essay rattled Fauci’s cage, but the $3B DARPA, half the size of Fauci’s $6B NIAID budget, never funded Defuse.

As a reminder, four world-class evolutionary virologists told Fauci on Jan 31, 2020, that we “find the genome inconsistent with expectations from evolutionary theory.” This was one week after Shi Zhengli of WIV published RaTG13. Then, two weeks after the Feb 1 teleconference, Baric wanted Shi arrested for publishing RaTG13.
Fauci jokes about $1B of vaccines and continues lab leak defense
As Major Josephy Murphy told us, Covid was a live attenuated animal vaccine that jumped species in the Wuhan lab—more specifically, “an American-created recombinant bat vaccine.” This risky research occurred in Fauci’s BSL4 lab in Montana, Rocky Mountain Lab. Wuhan is a story because they have access to live Chinese horseshoe bats in BSL4 captivity. As Fauci once said, “You gotta go where the action is.”

Fauci vs Trump
Both Brad Wenstrup (lead Covid committee Republican congressman from Ohio) and Tony Fauci are Italian-American medical doctors on different sides of the political spectrum. Wenstrup recently claimed Fauci could be arrested. “Despite the calls, it is very unlikely Fauci will be prosecuted. President-elect Trump has not called for Fauci to be prosecuted himself.” Fauci revealed in his memoirs that Trump liked him and their joint appearances because of the high TV ratings.
Latest on Covid committee
Formally called the “Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic,” most are disappointed it didn’t come to any conclusions. In 2024, the committee traveled to Laos but didn’t visit the Banal-52 bat cave like the US military did in 2017. Governments don’t prosecute themselves, and when departments fail, they usually receive more money & power (e.g., Fannie Mae, TSA, Secret Service).
Given the circumstances, I found the committee’s evidence and interviews great. They held their last hearing on Nov 14, 2024. David Morens is still on unpaid leave for $183,000 a year at NIAID and used his Gmail to feed Daszak inside information.
Ironically, one of the witnesses was Hilary Marston, who served as Fauci’s PR during the pandemic. In December 2019, Marston attended the Nipah Singapore bat conference, which I consider the first superspreader event of Covid. Like many during this fiasco, she was promoted to the FDA's Chief Medical Officer.

Despite repeated calls from politicians and editorial pages, there are no plans to establish a September 11-style commission on the pandemic, with Trump and Biden officials worried about revisiting unpopular decisions or spotlighting mistakes. Congress is unlikely to continue the Covid panel past this year.

Christian Drosten (aka the Fauci of Germany) tells us a little about his contacts with Shi Zhengli, the bat researcher from Wuhan. According to Christian's description, she kept quiet and made a misjudgment because she thought the whole thing would soon be over). But her reaction can also be interpreted differently. Zhengli sends him two papers. The problem at this point is that he only cites one of the publications.

The Amazon AI, Rufus, summarized, “It suggests the virus was designed to spread easily and that its transmission to humans was an unintended consequence of animal vaccine research at the Wuhan lab.” During a fact-check, I had to teach ChatGPT that SARS2 infects Mexican free-tailed bats and transmits in Egyptian fruit bats, both cited in DARPA Defuse.

Robert Kennedy Jr. has claimed he would fire 600 NIH staffers as the newly appointed director of Health and Human Services, a $1.7 trillion department (twice the size of the DoD) overseeing agencies like NIH, NIAID, FDA, and CDC. However, firing federal employees is notoriously tricky since they are more likely to leave due to death than termination.
JC on a Bike ghostwrote chapters for RJK Jr.’s lab leak book, The Wuhan Cover-up. In April 2020, JC was way ahead of his time, navigating the downtown streets of Pittsburgh while bringing attention to Baric’s human airway epithelial cells (cited in DARPA Defuse & NIAID’s R01). JC even discussed Baric’s immune evasion research involving the Orf6 protein (later found in SARS2).
The asymptomatic spread of SARS2 screamed high-level engineering. Still, I could not connect any of that to Wuhan until Major Murphy wrote, “The asymptomatic nature is also explained by the bat vaccine’s creators’ intention (a good vaccine does not generate symptoms). Such effects would be expected of an immature vaccine or a vaccine being reverse-engineered from a more virulent form into an attenuated form.”
Murphy brought attention to Baric’s live attenuated vaccine (LAV) paper. The same 2018 paper referenced the Mojiang mineshaft and had the infamous UGGUCGC sequence found in RaTG13. Everyone, including Matt and Alina, thought the UNC paper was for a “human” vaccine. But if you read closely, Baric has developed an LAV for coronavirus “reservoir species, such as bats.”
From DARPA Defuse, “Professor Baric will lead the targeted immune boosting work…extended to small groups of wild-caught Rhinolophus sinicus bats at WIV.” The R sinicus bat is similar to the RaTG13 bat and is a source of SARS1. The US Right to Know FOIA of Baric’s DARPA Defuse notes showed his HKU3r-CoV genome was essentially SARS-CoV-2 (both have ~20% divergence from SARS1).
Baric wanted to test his patented HKU3 S-mix “virus vaccine” in live Chinese bats that were only available in Wuhan labs. Why? As Baric wrote, “I have no bat colony.” Baric had already proven his SARS2 patent in humanized mice, writing, “Note that there is no virus detected in groups of mice vaccinated with HKU3 SMIX.” But every Western virologist had to ship samples (aka cold chain) to Wuhan to experiment with live Chinese bats, which were the source of SARS1 and, ironically, created SARS2.

Major Murphy is talking
Senator Marshall from Kansas wrote a letter to the DoD on behalf of Major Murphy’s FOIA, asking why the DARPA Defuse bid was labeled Top Secret in June 2021? The Pentagon gave a bureaucratic reason for transferring the file to the Intelligence Community (IC) during a May 2021 Biden administration review.
Marshall’s letter suggests the IC consulted with Baric via the Biological Sciences Experts Group (BSEG) by linking to his CV. “Private sector scientists may not have disclosed their personal conflicts of interest before advising or influencing the IC.”
During Baric’s congressional testimony, he confirmed attending a January 25–26, 2020, "BSEC" meeting. He stated, “There are three potential causes for the pandemic: natural origin, laboratory escape, and genetic engineering.” However, after meeting Fauci in February, Baric emailed several US government officials in March, asserting, “No, there is absolutely no evidence that this virus is bioengineered.”

The great irony is that Racaniello is part of the “smoking gun” email discussed in the book. I’ve put both in front of the dozen virologists who will communicate with me, so time will tell. My lesson from the survey was that no one knew what Covid was, so there was no coordinated coverup—except for that Wuhan wet market.

Redfield and bats
Former CDC head Robert Redfield claims SARS2 does NOT infect bats. However, Egyptian fruit bats, housed at the CDC’s bat lab in Atlanta, serve as a “non-natural” reservoir host for SARS2 (i.e., WA1). Though unnamed in my book, this information was confirmed by the CDC bat lab. Redfield hoped to write his lab leak book, but the offered advance wasn’t enough to cover the cost of a (top 25 NYT bestselling) ghostwriter. After dabbling in this murky industry, I’ve learned most books are ghostwritten.
Redfield was among my 100 surveyed scientists but didn’t respond to the question: As part of a published survey, please provide a biological explanation for why American mink, deer mice, deer, and lab bats (i.e., Egyptian fruit bats) are reservoir hosts for WA1, the best-known ancestral strain of SARS-CoV-2?
